Hymn to Inana
For two sopranos and piano
Hymn to Inana is a composition based on Sam Mirelman’s “New Developments in the Social History of Music and Musicians in Ancient Syria, Iraq, and Turkey”. The music is set to a Sumerian hymn dedicated to the Mesopotamian goddess Inana, goddess of love and war. The article inspired me to imagine what Mesopotamian music from the second millennium BC would sound like by considering the historical evidence and instrumental remains that archeologists and musicologists have discovered. The connection between ancient and contemporary music is explored through a prepared piano and extended vocal techniques.

About the Composer

Maria Atallah is an emerging Lebanese-Canadian composer of contemporary classical music based in Ottawa, Canada. Recognized for her “unique compositional language” (Gabrielle Gaudreault) she is a two-time first prize recipient of the SOCAN foundation Godfrey Ridout award for young composers (2017, 2018) and an English category winner of the 2018 Mécénat Musica Prix 3 Femmes for emerging female opera creators. In 2014, her Three Pieces for Unaccompanied Cello was short-listed for the International Sorodha Composition Competition in Antwerp, Belgium. Maria’s music explores melodic, heterophonic textures articulated by electroacoustic-inspired techniques. She holds a B.Mus from the University of Ottawa and an M.Mus (thesis) from McGill University.
Maria passed away, at the early age of 29, on Monday, February 6th, 2023.
