Struggling with addiction is a monumental challenge as anyone who has a family member in recovery, or who works in a professional capacity helping those looking achieve to recovery know. The goal is to attain sobriety for a lifetime. However, not everyone is prepared to handle the challenges recovery poses as documented by the National Institute of Health (NIH).
According to the NIH, individuals in recovery face steep obstacles and face similar relapse rates for drug use as those with other chronic health conditions. The unfortunate reality is that relapse is often times part of the recovery process, and in recent years, there has been an alarming increase in fatal overdoses. This presentation will examine harm reduction strategies that can be easily implemented by family members, medical providers, behavioral health professionals, and those who are in recovery themselves. We will also discuss practices that can reduce the likelihood of fatal overdose and drive down the disturbing upward trend of overdose deaths all across the country.
