Join us as we step back over a century to the time of the Sheelite miners. Rising high above the world renowned majestic landscape of Glenorchy on the Mt McIntosh Loop!

2 days of magnificent scenery, exploring historical huts and tramping in steep rugged terrain. The rewards did not com without challenges and problems along the way..

Day 1: Whakaari Conservation Area Car Park - the McIntosh Hut via the Mt Judah Loop 0:53

We began our climb up into Mt Judah, stopping off at abandoned Sheelite Mines ⛏ and Miners huts that were used between the late 1800’s and World War 2 💥. Tungsten was extracted from the sheelite and used for gun making in Europe for the allied forces during both world wars (the largest supply in the world). After reaching the Heather Jock Hut we made our way down to the Buckler Burn 💦 crossing the knee deep fast flowing river before heading up Mt Mcintosh via the McIntyre Hut. We witnessed a spectacular sunset on the upper slopes of Mt Macintosh before dinner at the hut under the southern stars and the Milky Way 🌌.


Day 2: McIntosh Hut - Glenorchy 09:51

The long descent down from the McIntosh Hut actually started with a climb up onto a high ridge with amazing views in each direction! 🙌🏻

After traversing the ridge we soon began our steep decline which lasted several hours on a serious gradient. Miranda lost her phone 📱 on the descent which was luckily found later by another trekker who must have saw my details in her notifications and contacted me. Under the hot summer sun ☀️ it was a long day 🥾 but worth it for the significant views!
