Women and workers' rights activists in the labor movement have rekindled demands for a minimum wage while also calling for policies to end violence and harassment against workers in workplaces. They argue that Uganda must have a minimum wage to improve the economic status of workers, especially those who work in factories. Parliament had initially passed a bill setting the minimum wage at 136,000 shillings, but President Museveni declined to assent to the bill, saying that a minimum wage would scare away would-be investors.
