During the D-day invasions on the 6th of June 1944, on sword beach, one soldier came ashore holding not a rifle, but bagpipes. This was private Bill Millin, also known by his comrades and his enemies as "The mad piper", for marching ashore playing his bagpipes loudly to inspire the troops. A British military directive banned soldiers from playing instruments on the battlefield, citing that it would only serve to attract sniper fire, but Millins commander refused the order and allowed him to play on. German soldiers captured after the battle confessed that they did not fire upon Millins because they believed he had gone mad.
