By 2030, over 230 million young Africans will enter working age. The question is not whether they exist. The question is whether we will successfully activate them.
Dorcas Mirembe’s journey began with one student named "Betty", a girl nearly pulled out of school because her family could not afford more than one term.
What followed was not charity, but collective agency.
Through youth-driven fundraising and community mobilization, Dorcas witnessed firsthand how one “yes” can ripple into generational change.
In this forward-looking talk, she challenges young people to stop waiting for institutional rescue and instead build localized solutions.
Education sponsorship, mentorship networks, and community collaboration become not side projects, but infrastructure for Africa’s future.
Dorcas Mirembe is a Mechanical Engineering student and youth leader committed to restoring hope through education.
As Founder of the Tabitha Scholarship Fund, she champions a model of leadership rooted in action, teamwork, and belief in Africa’s untapped human capital. Dorcas Mirembe is a mechanical engineering student with a vision for systemic impact, she founded the Tabitha Scholarship Fund, a youth-led nonprofit transforming the lives of financially disadvantaged students through education sponsorship, mentorship, and community empowerment. As class representative for the Mechanical Engineering Class of 2024, Dorcas bridges leadership, technical excellence, and civic responsibility — proving that age is no barrier to influence. Her work embodies a simple truth: Africa’s future isn’t waiting to be rescued; it’s waiting to be built. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
