In this talk, Dr. Kaydian Reid examines the American Dream through the lens of both personal storytelling and academic insight. She unpacks the often-overlooked costs of pursuing this ideal, questioning its attainability and exploring how striving for the American Dream shapes the lives, wellbeing, and opportunities of those who chase it. Dr. Kaydian Simone Reid is an Associate Professor and Director of Public Health Programs at the University of Saint Joseph, where her research, teaching, and practice focus on health equity. As a mixed-methods researcher, she explores how ethnic identity affects the health of English-speaking Afro- Caribbean immigrants, examining its role in shaping health practices and outcomes across generations. Her academic work is rooted in real-world public health experience
and personal insight as an Afro- Caribbean immigrant woman. Being both an immigrant and a mother, Dr. Reid brings personal and professional dedication to her field. Her notable achievements include the 2022 Dean’s Excellence in Teaching Award and the 2023 Reverend Stack Teaching Excellence Award—the university's highest teaching honor—as well as a 40 Under Forty community service award. Dr. Reid’s career is devoted to understanding and improving sustainable community and population health through research, teaching, mentorship, service, and practice. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
