Ven Pongal with Kathirikai Gothsu – Iyengar Veetu (Iyar) Style
Today’s special is a comforting South Indian breakfast – soft, ghee-flavoured Ven Pongal served with traditional Kathirikai Gothsu, prepared in authentic Iyengar Veetu (Iyar) style.
The Pongal is made using raw rice and moong dal, tempered with black pepper, cumin, ginger, curry leaves, and generous ghee – giving it that rich, homely taste.
The Kathirikai Gothsu is a classic brinjal gravy made with tamarind, sambar onions, green chillies, and a unique spice tempering – a signature of Iyengar household cooking.
A perfect weekend breakfast that brings the warmth and flavours of a traditional Tamil Brahmin home.
Ingredients:
Raw rice 1 tumbler (150g)
Moong dal 1/2 tumbler (75g)
Butter 1 tbsp
Ghee 2 tbsp
Cashew nuts 20g
Black pepper 1 tsp
Cumin seeds 1 tsp
Ginger 1 small piece
Curry leaves few
Milk 1 cup (175ml)
Asafoetida 1/2 tsp
Kathirikai Gothsu Ingredients:
Aubergine 1/2
Medium size potato 1
Medium size onion 2
(Sambar onion also good)
Green chilli 2
Garlic cloves 4
Curry leaves few
Tomato medium 1
Tamarind 20g
Oil 1 tbsp
Mustard 1/2 tsp
Fenugreek 1/4 tsp
Chilli powder 1/4 tsp
Kashmiri chilli powder 1/4 tsp
Turmeric powder 1/4 tsp
Coriander powder 3/4 tsp
(For magic powder)
Kashmiri chilli 2
Fenugreek few
Channa dal 1 tbsp
Coriander seeds 1 tbsp
Curry leaves few
