Sunday’s incident at Governor’s Meadow Lower Primary School had two apparently independent seats of fire, leading the Fire & Rescue Service to suspect a criminal act.
A joint investigation with the Royal Gibraltar Police is hoping to establish the facts “sooner rather than later”.
The fire happened in the silent hours yesterday morning, meaning it was fully developed by the time the emergency responders arrived. It took 16 firefighters one hour to extinguish it.
According to the Government, damage is being assessed. It seems one classroom has been affected by fire damage, with smoke and heat damage to other rooms also.
The Government has thanked the Fire and Rescue Service for successfully dealing with the fire despite what it called the "great personal risk to the fire fighters".
