The Music Track : Rotating Hour actually tells you all the information about the sculpture if you listen closely.
Franz Kafka’s Rotating Head is a kinetic sculpture located outside the Quadrio shopping center in Prague, Czech Republic. Created by artist David Černý, it was installed on October 31, 2014, and stands 11 meters (approximately 36 feet) tall, made of 42 rotating stainless steel panels weighing 39 tons in total. The sculpture symbolizes Kafka’s complex, fragmented mind and reflects themes from his works, especially The Metamorphosis, through its constantly shifting form.
The head rotates every hour on the hour, for 15 minutes at a time, from 8:00 AM to 9:00 PM, with the entire choreography lasting about 40 minutes. Each of the 42 layers moves independently, powered by 21 motors and over 1 kilometer of cables. The sculpture is also equipped with 42 slewing bearings from Rothe Erde Slovakia, ensuring smooth and precise movement.
It is situated near the historic area where Kafka once worked as an insurance clerk, adding symbolic depth to its location. The sculpture is free to view and is considered one of Prague’s most iconic modern art installations. After a major restoration completed in early 2024, it reopened and remains a popular attraction for both tourists and locals. For the best experience, arrive 10–15 minutes after the hour to avoid crowds and capture clear photos.
