Concert suite: Waxman arranged a concert suite from his film score, which premiered in 1963 at the Hollywood Bowl. The suite is approximately 8 minutes and 30 seconds long and can feature an alto saxophone soloist.
Orchestration: The regular musical score was orchestrated by Sidney Cutner, George Parrish, and others, and was recorded in 1951. Due to delays in the film's release, some musical adaptations were made by Daniele Amfitheatrof and Victor Young based on Waxman's work.
The score is famous for its emotional depth, featuring a prominent "Vickers Theme" and a "Fate Motif" often played by a solo trumpet. The score includes two love themes and jazz-influenced pieces that contrast with more dramatic and tragic sections like "The Drowning" and "Farewell & Frenzy"
A Place in the Sun is a 1951 American tragedy film based on the 1925 novel An American Tragedy by Theodore Dreiser and the 1926 play, also titled An American Tragedy. It tells the story of a working-class young man who is entangled with two women; one works in his wealthy uncle's factory and the other is a beautiful socialite. Another adaptation of the novel had been filmed once before, as An American Tragedy, in 1931. All these works were inspired by the real-life murder of Grace Brown by Chester Gillette in 1906, which resulted in Gillette's conviction and execution by electric chair in 1908.
A Place in the Sun was directed by George Stevens from a screenplay by Harry Brown and Michael Wilson, and stars Montgomery Clift, Elizabeth Taylor, Shelley Winters and Keefe Brasselle. Raymond Burr's performance impressed TV producer Gail Patrick, and later led to her casting him as Perry Mason.
