About Sampaguita (La Flor de Manila)
La Flor de Manila more commonly known as Sampaguita—is a song tribute to the Philippine national flower, 'Sampaguita', Jasminum Sambac, a specie of Jasmine also known as the Arabian Jasmine. It was composed by Dolores Paterno y Ignacio, born in Manila on March 10, 1854, was an esteemed composer during the Spanish era. Dolores was a sister of Pedro Paterno, a Filipino Nationalist and the architect of the Pact of Biak-Na-Bato, which created a truce between the Spanish government and the Filipino revolutionaries. She was only 27 when she passed away on July 3, 1881.
It was said that this song was written one night when the air was filled with the Sampaguita's fragrance. The melody just came to Dolores while she was asleep. The lyrics were written by her brother, Pedro, based on their mother's poem. While some sources claim that the lyrics were credited to Antonio Luna, Maximo Hizon, and Leopoldo Brias. The song eventually considered a classic.
