Mental health is the top contributing factor in maternal deaths in Utah—and the need for better access is growing.
A new report from the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute and Utah Department of Health and Human Services shows that nearly half of Utah women ages 18–44 report poor mental health. The state ranks 4th nationally for postpartum depression symptoms and 6th for diagnosed depression in women of reproductive age.
The data also shows that challenges are more severe in rural and underserved communities, where provider shortages make it harder to get timely care. Regular screening for depression and other mental health concerns is critical—especially during and after pregnancy.
Efforts are underway to improve access:
• The Healthcare Workforce Financial Assistance Program provides student loan repayment assistance for mental health providers who want to work in rural areas.
• The UHA has a goal to help expand behavioral health crisis centers in rural areas to reduce ER visits and connect patients with long-term support.
Improving maternal mental health is essential to protecting moms and babies across Utah.
