Описание: The Malayattoor Carnival is a vibrant celebration held during the Christmas and New Year season, filling the village with devotion, cultural programmes, processions, music and stalls. Starting just before Christmas day and going on for a few days beyond New Year, visitors from across Kerala gather here, creating an atmosphere of joy and spiritual unity alongside traditional Kerala festivities. The Malayattoor Lake adds a serene charm to the area. Surrounded by greenery and gentle hills, the calm waters reflect the peaceful rhythm of village life. During the festive season, the lakeside and riverbanks become lively resting points for visitors supported by about ten thousand stars which adorn the waterbody, while at other times they remain tranquil spaces that highlight the natural beauty of the region. For those who cannot travel all the way to Fort Cochin or other parts of Kochi during the season, this place comes as a blessing in the heart of nature.

One of the most striking events is the burning of the Pappanji like in Fort Cochin, on New Year’s Eve (December 31 night). Pappanji is a large effigy, traditionally symbolising the old year with all its worries, sins, and hardships. As the clock approaches midnight, the effigy is ceremonially set on fire. This act represents letting go of the past and welcoming the New Year with hope, renewal, and positivity. People gather in large numbers, counting down together, bursting crackers, and cheering as the flames rise -creating a powerful moment of collective celebration. This visit happened after that burning process. At the heart of Malayattoor stands the renowned St. Thomas Syro-Malabar Catholic Church, one of the most important Christian pilgrimage centres in India.
