The journey to Mahabalipuram which started from Seashell Residency where we stayed at Chennai became exciting with a stop at the Crocodile Bank which is one of the most famous reptile conservation centres in India. Walking through the park, one can see a wide variety of crocodiles, alligators and other species kept in spacious enclosures. The place was both educational and thrilling, as information boards explain the importance of conserving these ancient reptiles. The sight of these powerful creatures resting quietly or moving slowly in the water left a strong impression and made the visit memorable. After leaving the Crocodile Park, the next stop was the Seashell Museum, a colourful and fascinating place that showcases thousands of shells collected from seas around the world. The museum displayed shells of different shapes, sizes, and colours, arranged neatly in glass cases, along with small marine models and decorative items. Walking through the galleries which included 3D pictures and dinosaur models felt like taking a journey through the oceans, and it creates a sense of wonder about marine life.
The journey finally reached Mahabalipuram, famous for its UNESCO World Heritage monuments that reflect the greatness of Pallava art and architecture. The Shore Temple, the Pancha Rathas and the magnificent Arjuna’s Penance are carved from stone and stand as timeless symbols of ancient Indian craftsmanship. This is my second visit to the place, with the earlier one happening in 2011 with my parents and combined with Kanchipuram and its temples. We have been seeing more Cholas whenever we look at the history of Tamil Nadu and South India, but this architectural grandeur reminds us of the artistic cravings of the Pallava dynasty. Walking among these monuments, with the sound of the sea nearby, gave a feeling of stepping back into history. The visit ended with a deep sense of admiration for the skill and vision of the artists who created these masterpieces centuries ago, and some fine food was also added by the end. If you are at Chennai or Pondicherry, traveling in this route by the road is a must, and a day is surely needed to make sure that the best is taken.
