Traveling to a new country, arriving at the new airport can sometimes give us a little bit of anxiety so in today’s episode I’ll share few tips and information about Bali’s airport so when you finally arrive here, it’ll be much easier and less stressful.
Bali's Airport, officially known as Ngurah Rai International Airport is located in the south of Bali and it's very close to most of Bali's main tourist areas. Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu and Tanah Lot are some of the popular spots located in the north of the airport, and Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Benoa and Uluwatu are to the south of the airport. Their two terminals, the international and domestic terminals are right next to each other.
Ok, here are 10 quick tips on how you get through the airport as quickly as possible:
1. When you get off the plane it’s best to move quickly towards the arrivals hall. Depending on the time of day the lines can be pretty long with waiting times that can be longer than 1 hour.
2. Might sound silly but if you can, take a bathroom break on the plane before arrival, it’ll save you a lot of time as the airport’s bathrooms always have big lines, especially ladies rooms.
3. Make sure to complete your immigration arrival form on the plane. Sometimes there’s no more forms left in the arrivals hall, and definitely never any pens, so make sure you grab one from the flight attendant and have one ready and completed. You only need one form per family.
4. If you’re staying in Bali for less than 30 days, you don’t need a visa but if you planning on staying for more than 30 days, remember to head to the VOA Payment counter to Pay for your Visa on Arrival.
5. Keep your passports ready (remember it has to be valid 6 months valid, and have enough space for the sticker). Aside from your passport and filled-out arrival form, make sure to also have your boarding pass as it is required from the immigration officer to complete your entrance into Bali.
6. When you have passed through immigration go towards the conveyor belt to pick up your luggage (check the number on TV screens according to your flight number). Unfortunately, this airport is known for its slow baggage handling, so just be patient.
7. Once you have collected your luggage proceed to the customs line where you hand over your arrival form and will be directed either to the exit or towards the X-ray screening.
Make sure you do not bring more than IDR million 100,000,000 (7000 US$)
8. You’ll need some IDR to pay for the taxi so you can either withdraw money from the ATM located at the airport or there are also a couple of reputable money changers at the airport alongside the ATM’s. You can use these without any risk of being ripped off as they are completely trustworthy.
9. Transportation - As far as getting a taxi I would recommend organizing your transport beforehand. But you if haven’t done so you have couple options:
A). You will be confronted with a wall of taxi drivers all trying to catch your attention, the drivers can be very aggressive and persistent. You need to do some research on where you going and how much more or less the fare should be and than try to negotiate. Never agree on the first price, it’s always way too much. If it’s your first time in Bali, the experience can be nerve-racking, as I mentioned the drivers can be very abrasive. Again, it’s your first time and you don’t feel comfortable negotiation the price, just organize your taxi prior to your arrival.
B). If you don’t have a lot of luggage, you can just ignore all the local taxi drivers at the airport, walk outside the airport and order GRAB or GOJEK which is their version of UBER and it works the same exact way. The prices are way cheaper than the local taxis. Remember to download the app and register beforehand.
C). We haven’t used that option yet but there is a TAXI SERVICE counter at the airport. Metered and fixed fares are offered. Just remember to agree on a fare before getting into a taxi.
10. You can buy your sim card at the airport but you’ll usually pay about 3 times the price. I won’t get into details in this video about prices but if you want to get an Indonesian sim card right away I would recommend asking your taxi driver to stop at the legit phone store and purchase it there versus buying it at the airport.
I think that’s all the tips I have for you guys regarding the airport. Hope this will make your arrival into Bali a little easier. If you have some additional tips please share them in the comments below. Safe travels guys!
