The fastest thing at Magic Kingdom isn’t the monorail, Space Mountain, or even TRON Lightcycle / Run. It’s the trash. Hidden beneath Disney World’s Magic Kingdom is a pneumatic waste system called AVAC (Automated Vacuum Collection) that sucks garbage through underground tubes at speeds of up to 60 miles per hour - moving trash below the feet of guests all day long.
Every day, thousands of pounds of waste from restaurants, shops, and attractions are pulled through this underground network to a central collection facility. The system quietly keeps the park clean while remaining almost completely invisible to guests.
Despite being one of the most fascinating pieces of infrastructure at Walt Disney World, Disney rarely talks about it.
By digging through old engineering documents, construction plans, and archival articles from the early development of Walt Disney World, I was able to piece together how this hidden system actually works, and why Disney built it in the first place.
And here’s the surprising part: Magic Kingdom’s AVAC network is one of only two systems like it still operating in the entire United States. But at one point, technology like this was expected to be the future of waste management in cities around the world.
So why didn’t it catch on?
In this video, I explore the hidden infrastructure beneath Magic Kingdom -including the engineering behind Disney’s trash system, how the AVAC network connects across the park, and why this futuristic technology never became as widespread as many once expected.
Let's dive into it!
