20 km of Raw Solitude | Saint-Privat-d'Allier to Saugues

Описание: Via Podiensis Day 2 on the Camino de Santiago takes me from Saint-Privat-d’Allier to Saugues, France (20 km). This stage of the Camino de Santiago in France crosses the Margeride region and marks a turning point early on the Via Podiensis route.

Leaving Saint-Privat-d’Allier, the trail quickly becomes remote and demanding. Long climbs, open farmland, forests, and wide horizons define this section of the Camino. This is a route walked by pilgrims for centuries, and it still feels rugged, quiet, and deeply reflective.

Along the way, I pass symbolic and historic Camino markers, including the Pilgrim’s Flame, a wooden sculpture representing hope and the inner light carried forward on pilgrimage. Nearby stands the wooden wolf, tied to local legends of the Beast of Gévaudan, a reminder of the fears, challenges, and unknowns pilgrims face as they move deeper into the Margeride.

I arrive in Saugues tired but grateful and visit the Église Saint-Médard, a historic church that has welcomed pilgrims for generations. I spend the night at a gîte (Centre d’Hébergement), sharing space, stories, and rest with fellow pilgrims—one of the great gifts of the Camino.

Day 2 is where the Via Podiensis begins to feel less like a hike and more like a pilgrimage. The body is tested, the mind quiets, and the Camino rhythm starts to take hold.
