In this video, I share what my garden taught me this week while growing food in a tropical climate in Rivers State, Nigeria.
From harvesting cantaloupe successfully during the dry season to identifying female papaya seedlings early by examining their root systems, this week was full of practical lessons in seasonal planting and soil understanding.
Last year, I attempted to grow cantaloupe during the rainy season here in Port Harcourt, and the high humidity and frequent rainfall led to fungal diseases and poor yield. This dry season, however, the same crop thrived proving that timing and climate matter just as much as technique.
I also demonstrate:
• How to identify female papaya seedlings before transplanting
• Why male papaya trees produce flowers but no fruit
• How to propagate a broken tomato plant
• Why sharp sandy soil limits plant growth
• How basil naturally reseeds in healthy soil
• Observing natural pest control in the garden ecosystem
If you’re interested in tropical gardening, dry season farming, organic growing, or growing food in hot climates, this video shares real-life experience from a working home garden.
