Ovarian torsion occurs when the ovary twists around the ligaments that support it, compromising its blood supply. This twisting can happen due to factors like an enlarged cyst or tumor, which increases the mobility of the ovary. As the ovary rotates, the venous drainage is obstructed first, leading to increased venous pressure and edema. If the arterial supply is also compromised, ischemia occurs, causing tissue necrosis. Clinically, this presents as sudden onset unilateral abdominal or pelvic pain, often accompanied by nausea and vomiting. Early diagnosis and surgical intervention are crucial to restore blood flow and preserve ovarian function.
