Mark Harmon, the star of NCIS, one of tv's longest-running dramas, kind of owes his career to Ozzie Nelson. Harmon, a friend of the Nelson boys with no acting experience, was asked to fill-in on 'Ozzie's Girls' for an actor who backed out. He took to it like a fish to water, and hung around the set to learn how shows were produced and edited. It wasn't long before he started getting tv gigs like '240-Robert', an 'Emergency'-style show from the producers of 'Chips'. It was just a way station for Harmon, who left as soon as his 13-episode contract was up. The theme, often buried behind sound effects or dialogue, is by the prolific team of Mike Post and Pete Carpenter.
Some time later Harmon would team up with Marlee Matlin for 'Reasonable Doubts', playing a cop who worked with assistant prosecutor Matlin. It ran for two seasons and both leads received multiple award nominations. The theme, heard here in stereo, is by Brad Fiedel.
BONUS: Leroy Jethro Gibbs sings?!? Back on '240-Robert' the script called for Harmon to write and sing a little ditty called 'Saddle My Dreams' (actually composed by Gene and Paul Nelson). In this low-res clip you too can enjoy the sophisticated song stylings of Mark Harmon. What would Simon Cowell say?!
