Cantiga 36 "Muit' amar devemos"

"Mucho debemos amar con nuestras voluntades a la Señora que nos libra de cuitas y tempestades."

Y de esto mostró la Virgen, en el mar de Bretaña, donde hizo una maravilla tan grande como no la puede mostrar otro santo, cuando fue a librar una nave en la que iba multitud de hombres para buscar su provecho, por lo que todos luchamos.

Y como singlaban por el mar, tal fue su riesgo, que se levantó gran tormenta, y se hizo oscura la noche, sin que nada les valiese, ni saber ni cordura, y todos creyeron morir, sabedlo de cierto.

Cuando vieron tal peligro, gimiendo y llorando, se pusieron a rogar a los santos todos, llamando por su nombre a cada uno de ellos, rogándoles que viniesen a socorrerlos, por sus piedades.

Cuando tal oyó un abad que en la nave iba, díjoles: "Tengo para mí que hacéis una gran locura, que vais a rogar a otros santos, y a Santa María, que nos puede librar de esto, es a la que no mentáis."

Cuando esto oyeron decir a aquel santo abad, entonces, todos, con unánime voluntad y corazón, llamaron a la Virgen Santa, Madre de la piedad, que les valiese y no reparase en sus maldades.

Y decían: "Señora, válenos, que la nave se hunde."
En diciendo esto, miraron, como es costumbre, al mástil, y vieron sobre él una gran luz que alumbraba mucho más que otras claridades.

Y después que esto se les apareció, se calmó el viento, y el cielo vieron claro, y el mar amansado, y llegaron pronto al puerto que deseaban, lo que les satisfizo, no tengáis duda.





This is how Holy Mary appeared at night on the mast of the ship which was on its way to England and saved it from sinking.

Concerning this, the Virgin performed a miracle so great that no other saint can perform its like. On the sea of England She delivered a ship on which traveled a great company of men in search of fortune, for which you all strive.

While they sailed through the sea, such was their luck that a great storm sprang up, and the night grew very dark. Their wisdom and good sense availed them nothing. They all thought they would die, you may be sure.

When a holy abbot who traveled on the ship heard this, he said to them: "I think you are committing a great folly to pray to other saints and do not remember Holy Mary, who can deliver uf from this."

When they heard the holy abbot say this, all with one heart and will called on the Holy Virgin, Mother of Mercy, that She might come to their aid and overlook their misdeeds.

They said: "Lady, help us, for the ship is sinking."
While they said this, they gazed at the mast, as is the custom, and saw a great glow on top which shone brighter than any other lights.

When this appeared to them, the wind was calmed, and they saw the sky become clear and the sea quiet. They soon arrived at port as they had desired, and were overjoyed, as you might well believe.
