The adventure kicks off in Amarillo with a stop at the quirky and unforgettable Bug Ranch, Amarillo’s Route 66-style twist on a classic roadside icon.

From there, it’s a quick visit to the legendary Big Texan Steak Ranch, soaking in the history, and the larger-than-life Texas atmosphere before calling it a night along Route 66.

The next morning starts with one of the most famous stops on Route 66 — Cadillac Ranch. Spray paint in hand, I leave my mark on a Cadillac just like travelers have been doing for decades.

From there, it’s west to the geographic heart of Route 66 in Adrian, home of the iconic Midpoint Cafe. This is where I stop for the famous Ugly Crust Pie, right at the exact midpoint of the Mother Road — a must-do for any Route 66 bucket list trip.

As the miles roll on, the road leads through the hauntingly beautiful ghost towns along the Texas–New Mexico border, where abandoned motels, quiet streets, and fading signs tell the story of Route 66’s past.

The drive wraps up in Glenrio, a true Route 66 ghost town straddling two states — a powerful and fitting end to an unforgettable stretch of the Mother Road.
