This part of the walk:
Starting ting from the Elan Valley visitors center we headed towards the Caban Coch Dam but you can go either way around. You'll pass though a gate and turn left behind the buildings, we crossed the footbridge right at the bottom of the dam at 2:54 where you get a great view from the bottom of the dam and you can look the other way down the river too.
Once over the bridge you'll see some steep steps which we head up, all though there steep you're up very quick, and you can see the dam from the top at 8:52
We then head along the side of reservoir, you could stop here for a picnic on a nice day. As we head on the path begins to get stoney and I personally would not advise you to take young kids any further than this as you are right by the water and apart from the warning signs you get the feeling of very deep water.
Entire walk overview:
For this walk we start right at the visitors centre, so you can grab a coffee and a bite to eat if needed. There are toilets a shop and lots to see here. You can park here and you’ll need to buy a ticket.
Its a circular walk so you can go either way, I started by heading towards the Caban Coch Dam and over the bridge at the bottom.
We then headed up the side of the dam which is quite steep but also short, I stopped at the top to see the view, you then pass right along side the water. The track here is quite stoney and you will need to tread carefully, after a short while you head up a little onto a mud track where you’ll need to duck under a few trees.
As you come around Craig Cnwch hill you head onto grass and up another steep hill, you can take your time here and look back at the great views of the Caban-coch Reservoir and the Garreg Ddu Dam.
As you go up you can branch off here and link to the Caban-coch walk you can fine here • Caban-coch Reservoir Circular Walk . and there is a small waterfall you can stop to look at
Once you climb this bank and get to the top again you can branch off and head right to the top of Craig Cnwch to get some amazing views.
If you carry along the footpath you will pass a small patch of trees, head on and you’ll come to a gate onto a very quite road heading back down hill. As we walked down we bumped into some cows who were a bit unsure of my dog so be careful here if you do have a dog with you.
Keep going and you’ll get to another quite road along side a wood, as you walk along the road you will see the footpath arrow pointing down though some trees, head this way following the path right down to the bottom where you’ll see the bridge in the Elan village. Head over the bridge and turn left and you will be back at the Elan Valley visitors centre.
