Next in our series titled 'Nadopasana' is a concert by T Balasaraswati & Party for the 1961 Annual music conference at the Music Academy, Madras.
Balasaraswati's grandson Aniruddha Knight recollects:
"Viswa Thatha (T Viswanathan) was telling me how Balamma (T Balasaraswati) danced the kapi varnam - Sarasalanu for the first time in 1961. They put it together for the Music Academy concert. They were working on the kapi varnam for 6 months - not the dance but the music alone took them that long. Even for a single day in those 6 months, Balamma never danced that varnam. It was only on the day of the concert that she danced it."
This tells us how crucial music was for Balasaraswati. Unfortunately the video recording of this performance is not available, however the musicality is in itself an experience that cannot be put to words. This concert was performed on the evening of 27th December 1961 at the Music Academy New Building, Mylapore. The programme details are as follows:
