There is no “hacking” your body into thinking it has more oxygen available to it than it does. When going from sea level to altitude there is simply a pressure difference — which causes less oxygen to be pushed from the air into our bodies.
Leaving us windy or woozy on our vacations or treks.
While the only way we can make this better from sea level is to improve our overall fitness level. Since we are using less oxygen at altitude this means all of our bodies VO2 max — or max amount of oxygen we can use — is lower as we go higher. The best way to feel better at altitude is to simply be FITTER when you get there.
Otherwise — the best things you can do are wait a few days for big hikes. Spend a day or two going up in elevation or sleeping there before very high altitude hikes. Hydrate. Eat more carbs. Add in electrolytes (I use @liquidiv code DOCLYSSFITNESS). Avoid alcohol. And give yourself grace and have fun!
