I took a wild, gnarly chunk of Mango wood and turned it into a one-of-a-kind, gallery-quality art piece using classic woodturning techniques. This was not a safe, predictable blank. It was full of voids, gaps, and natural chaos—the kind of piece that makes you wonder at every stage whether it’s going to hold together or explode apart on the lathe.
Instead of cutting away all the character, I chose to keep the natural openings and irregularities that make this piece so striking. That meant leaning into the risk, trusting the process, and carefully shaping the wood while preserving the very features that made it intimidating in the first place.
To bring out the depth and beauty of the grain, I finished the piece with multiple coats of clear epoxy resin, building up a deep, glassy, high-shine surface that highlights every curve, edge, and void.
This is woodturning at its best: respecting the wood, embracing the danger, and turning something rough and unpredictable into fine art.
