Listen to the repetitive but beautiful sounds of the Oriental cuckoo or Horsfield's cuckoo - Cuculus optatus.
Cuckoos are fascinating birds with a widespread distribution around the world. Many cuckoo species are brood parasites, meaning they trick other bird species into raising their chicks. Because of this fact they are well represented in various mythologies and cultures where they are encountered. Acoustic communication is an important aspect that helps cuckoo females coordinate when they lay their eggs in the nest of a different species.
Cuckoos are secretive birds, difficult to see but easy to hear and they are known for their wide repertoire of calls. Cuckoo calls are usually simple short songs made up of few notes, resembling whistles, flutes, or hiccups. The purpose of their calls is to advertise territory and to attract a mate. Within a species, the calls are remarkably consistent across the range, even in species with very large ranges. This suggests, along with the fact that many species are not raised by their true parents, that the calls of cuckoos are innate and not learnt.
