Kiera Eckhardt, Doctoral Candidate in Anthropology at the University of Kansas, presents her latest research on migration in Quito and Guayaquil, Ecuador to the Afternoon Seminar Series through the Department of Anthropology at the University of Kansas.
This presentation draws on ethnographic fieldwork conducted in Quito and Guayaquil to examine how migration is understood, experienced, and navigated in everyday life. Centering the perspectives of migrants, family members, and community members, it explores how mobilities shape livelihoods, social relationships, and senses of belonging across Ecuador's two largest cities. The talk also reflects on the challenges and possibilities of conducting urban ethnographic research on migration, highlighting how local contexts shape migratory experiences and anthropological inquiry.
