This talk, featuring Professor Brooklyn Walker (University of Tennessee, Knoxville, USA), was convened by the Loughborough University Nationalism Network (LUNN) on Wednesday, 11 February 2026.
Abstract: In the United States context, Christian nationalism is a worldview that sees the nation as being “of, by, and for Christians” (Djupe, Sokhey, and Lewis 2023). On its face, Christian nationalism is seemingly absent of racial connotations, but multiple studies have found strong relationships between Christian nationalism and attitudes consistent with a preference for racial separation and White dominance in the United States. These findings have led some to argue that Christian nationalism is inherently racialized. In this presentation, I will explore the prevalence of Christian nationalism support among the main racial groups in the US and discuss when Christian nationalism is racialized, arguing that it ultimately is a flexible tool to advance ingroup protection.
