Rickmansworth Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Описание: Located in the county of Hertfordshire, and around 20 miles northwest of central London, is the town of Rickmansworth.

Geographically Rickmansworth is situated by the confluence of three rivers: the Colne, Gade & Chess. It is from here that the Three Rivers district of Hertfordshire takes its name, of which Rickmansworth is the administrative headquarters.

In 1542 a market charter was granted to Rickmansworth by Henry VIII. Industry in the town historically revolved around its position along the aforementioned three rivers. These provided a source of watercress, as well as the power to fuel water mills for the production of corn and silk. Other industries included paper making, brewing and leather tanning.

In 1793 an Act of Parliament authorised the construction of the Grand Junction Canal. By 1796 it had reached Rickmansworth and by 1805 the canal was complete, having reached London. In 1929 the Grand Junction Canal was renamed, becoming the Grand Union Canal.

In 1862 a now-defunct railway station opened in Rickmansworth. It was a branch line to Watford which, at the time, was still a very small town. The station closed to passengers in 1952.

In 1887 Rickmansworth was connected to London by rail with the extension of the Metropolitan Railway, which later became the Metropolitan Line on the London Underground in 1933. This doubles up as London Underground station (despite neither being in London nor underground!) and a National Rail station with direct routes to London Marylebone and Aylesbury. In 1923 gravel from Rickmansworth was transported via the Metropolitan Railway to Wembley for the construction of the old Wembley Stadium.
