Every interaction with your donkey is teaching something — whether you realize it or not.
In this video, Dan and I work with four different donkeys at very different stages of training:
• Introducing first touch using advance and retreat
• Building comfort while haltering a nervous donkey
• Preparing a donkey to pick up their feet — without accidentally teaching them to kick
Many kicking problems don’t start with “bad” donkeys.
They start with small moments of pressure, timing, and release that unintentionally reward the wrong response.
We’ll show you what to watch for, how to avoid creating defensive behavior, and how to set your donkey up for confidence instead of resistance.
If you’re starting a young donkey — or fixing holes in the foundation — this matters more than you think.
Because what you reinforce today becomes their habit tomorrow.

🐾 Adoption & Gentling
We are a Forever Branded adoption center and partner.
That means you can come here to adopt your own wild burro (and sometimes mustangs — though our main focus is burros).
You can:
• Adopt an untouched wild burro, or
• Bring home a wild that has been gently started and introduced to domestic life
Mary Jo also gentles wild burros and mustangs for adopters who want support in that transition.
