In this webinar, Mia and Courtney will discuss findings from their research about the impacts of expulsion on children and caregivers, and how expulsion can cause or compound trauma. They will highlight the need to consider the intersections of trauma and disability when discussing expulsion in early childhood.
Presenters
Mia Chudzik is a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Illinois. She holds a PhD in special education. Her research focuses on the use of trauma-informed care in early childhood/early childhood special education settings. She currently teaches in a program designed for currently practicing teachers to earn their master’s degree in trauma-informed practices and pedagogy. Prior to earning her PhD, she worked as an early interventionist for children ages birth-3 and was an inclusive preschool teacher.
Courtney O’Grady is an assistant professor of early childhood special education. She holds a bachelor’s degree in early childhood education, a master’s degree in early childhood special education, an additional graduate certificate in English as New Language through the Alliance for Catholic Education at the University of Notre Dame, and a Ph.D. in special education from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She taught preschool in inclusive, diverse settings for 10 years. She was recognised for her preschool teaching with the Joliet Area Great Teacher’s Award in 2017. Her research seeks to disrupt deficit narratives about children and families, advance inclusion for young children with disability, and support the well-being of the early childhood workforce. She currently serves as the chair of the Research Committee of the Division of Early Childhood (DEC) of the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC).
