Located in the county of Wiltshire, and around five miles northeast of Swindon, is the town of Highworth.
The town's name is derived from Old English 'Wrde', meaning 'enclosure', with the 'high' prefix added in circa 1200, in reference to its position on a small hill. In 1206 a market charter was granted to Highworth by King John.
At the heart of the town is the Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels. This dates back to the Norman era, but was remodelled in the late 15th century, and underwent restoration in the 19th century. The church is Grade I listed.
In 1883 a railway station opened in Highworth. This was the northern terminus of a branch line to Swindon. The station, along with the branch line, closed to passengers in 1953, and to goods in 1962. Today, public transport to Highworth consists of direct buses from Swindon, Lechlade, Witney and various other nearby locations.
