In a separate but equally significant deal Washington approved a $9 billion sale of Patriot advanced missile defence systems to Saudi Arabia. The Patriots among the most advanced air and missile interceptors in the U.S. arsenal will reinforce Riyadh’s air defences against ballistic and cruise missile threats particularly amid concerns over regional security dynamics and the risk of escalation with Iran.

The State Department framed both deals as essential to U.S. national interests and the security of its allies saying they will help Israel and Saudi Arabia maintain robust and ready defence postures. The approvals come as tensions persist in the Middle East including ongoing negotiations over nuclear and security issues with Tehran and as the U.S. seeks to balance deterrence with diplomatic engagement.

While these sales are officially cleared they still require notification to Congress and lawmakers will have an opportunity to review or object within set timeframes a process that could shape future U.S. defence cooperation in the region.
