Most of society are unaware of the different phases within a seizure. It is important to recognition recognise the symptoms of the Pre-Ictal period, Being the time before of a seizure. The increased neurochemical of Serotonin in my blood stream is evident to me by the way that I am acting. This tells me that I am most likely be having a seizure that night.
Then understanding what happens during what is observed as the seizure (Ictal period). This includes the brain releasing the neurochemical of GABA to control the irregular activity causing the seizure to occur. Also, Dopamine to reduce pain awareness.
Further activity called the Peri-Ictal period, which is often not recognised being as a part the seizure. During this period, the individual who has experienced the seizure will look at you if spoken to, but will have difficulty responding in spoken words. As short-term memory is not converted into long-term memory during this period, the individual will often hold no memory of what occurred during this Peri-Ictal period of up to one hour.
The Post-Ictal period is when the individual has regained full conscious awareness. With the neurochemicals that were released to control the seizure being still present at a high level in the body, one must account for these over the next day. The increased dopamine might include feeling of depression or one having a low energy level.
It has been the introduction of Cannabidiol (CBD) oil, firstly in an Adult Medical Trial in 2016, that has strongly reduced both the length and severity of my seizure activity. Where the Medicinal Cannabis, CBD in different to regular cannabis or marijuana is that the Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) element in the medication has been reduced to lower that 1%. Removing both the feeling that most people who have smoked marijuana, would identify as being “high” when using the medication, and not making psychoactive decisions. This is not present in the medication because of the strongly reduced THC element.
