DDC is working hard to protect thousands of residents on the Lower East Side from sea level rise and storm surge while continuing to preserve views and access to the waterfront.
We are making progress on the Brooklyn Bridge-Montgomery Coastal Resilience Project. Commissioner Foley joined Deputy Mayor Joshi, NYC DEP, and more to demonstrate the newly installed flip-up gates in Lower Manhattan.
The flip-up gates are hydraulically activated into the vertical deployed position. They are fabricated in Houston, Texas by FloodBreak Automatic Floodgates, then shipped and assembled on site in NYC. They are made with corrosion resistant aluminum and stainless steel; their height varies from 5 to 12 feet.
Overall, the project consists of 1900 linear feet of floodwall, 97 flip-up gates, 6 roller gates, and 2 swing gates. The gates will remain in their down and locked position until they are raised for routine maintenance, inspection and exercising, and in preparation for an approaching coastal storm surge.
