Welcome to the NR4CS (Network of Researchers for Citizen Science) Training Series 2024!
This video features insights and discussions from Training Meeting 6, held on August 2, 2024.
Today's training meeting and panel discussion addressed the topic of ‘Publishing’ in Citizen Science.
Anna Berti Summan from the Luiss School of Law, presented her work on the ‘Sensing for Justice' project, which addresses the challenges of publishing citizen science-related research in academic journals. She explored the intersection of citizen science, civic monitoring and environmental law enforcement. Anna highlighted the challenges in her field, particularly the lack of recognition of citizen science in legal studies and the difficulty in publishing her work in traditional scientific journals. She expressed her hope to collaborate across sectors to ensure citizen science is valued as an interdisciplinary field that can benefit various disciplines.
The panel discussion included guest speakers James Sprinks from Earthwatch Europe, Jean Schensul from The Institute for Community Research, and Joseph Roche from Trinity College Dublin. The panel discussed the various aspects of the challenges and opportunities of publishing citizen science research. Recognising the value of community involvement, the speakers highlighted the need for diverse publishing approaches, including data sharing and reaching across disciplines, while stressing the inclusion of citizen science participants in credit allocation. They also addressed the role of community stakeholders in research, the complexities of starting collaborative projects, and the lack of recognition for citizen science in academic and governmental sectors. Strategies for improving recognition included advocacy, training, and integrating citizen science into academic evaluations, with a focus on separate funding for these projects.
