On the Great Plains in 1887, settlers in Custer County, Nebraska posed proudly before their sod houses, homes crafted from thick blocks of prairie soil and grass when lumber was scarce. These “soddies” could be built in a week for under five dollars, offering insulation against harsh winters and scorching summers. Captured by photographer Solomon D. Butcher, whose collection preserved over 1,500 images of sod homes, they stand as enduring symbols of frontier ingenuity under the Homestead Act of 1862.
