Spring Clean Up For Mop Head Hydrangea (Macrophylla) - March 5, 2026

Описание: Spring prune a Big Leaf Hydrangea.
Just clean up dead branches and prune to a strong bud. Also to remove crossed branches.
This is an older plant. Remove a few branches to revitalize and make space for new growths.

Fundamentals of Hydrangea cut backs:
1. Choose a "guide" branch, which is about where the tallest point to be. Cut at that level. This is applicable only if you need to control its height.
2. Also take into consideration here the healthy, big buds are. Cut above these, be it above or below the height above.
3. Dead/thin/weak branches are to be removed where they join the next one.
4. Crossed branches/branches that rub against each other would have one out of two removed, usually the older branch
5. Remove 1/3 of really old branches. This encourages bottom growth to rejuvenate the plant
6. Reduced branching to reduce crowding. Cut more/less depending on the extent
7. Finally, fine tune the shape and size.

Each year, the focus may be different. I will leave the size reduction till Fall.
