The Sheet Bend Knot is useful for tying together (joining) two pieces of rope with different diameters. Using a Square Knot would likely result in the know slipping because the smaller rope will not bite against the larger rope. The Sheet Bend is instrumental when trying to get a large rope over a limb or across a creek bed or ravine. A smaller rope can be tied to the large rope and the small rope thrown over the long or creek and used to hoist the larger rope.
