When a Narcissist goes through the devaluation and discard phases, they frequently appear unbothered, almost smug, about your departure. This is because they have been absorbing your essence and intend to replicate the admirable qualities and behaviors they observed in you. Driven by an insatiable desire for control over everything and everyone, they genuinely believe they can download your personality and install it into this new Supply, as if a person were a piece of software. This is why, upon ending a relationship, they often speak with an exaggerated confidence, almost as if they've already won a grand prize. In reality, they are meticulously observing and noting every positive attribute they found in you, creating a blueprint for their next creation.

You may have noticed them beginning to exhibit behaviors or traits that were once uniquely yours—actions, phrases, even interests they never displayed before their encounter with you. They meticulously study and observe your every move. Why? Because you are special, and on some level, they recognize that. They aim to adopt your characteristics and traits, believing they can meticulously reconstruct a version of you within the new Supply. However, they are fundamentally and catastrophically mistaken. The new Supply is not you; it can never be.

To truly grasp this bizarre behavior, we need to look under the hood of the narcissistic mind. What you're witnessing isn't flattery; it's a desperate and pathological act of identity theft. They are, in essence, empty vessels. Their personality is a patchwork quilt, stitched together from the traits of people they have admired, envied, and ultimately, exploited.

Think of the narcissist as a collector. When they were with you, they weren't just enjoying your company; they were cataloging your strengths. Your kindness, your resilience, your sense of humor, your style, your connections with people—these were all valuable assets they sought to acquire. This is why the discard feels so cold and transactional. They believe they have successfully "downloaded" the best parts of you, and now they can simply find a new, more compliant "hardware"—the new supply—to run your "software."
