4th November 2025 • Winter birds on Rathlin Island Until recently, Mute Swans have been a rare sight on Rathlin, but in the last few years we have seen a small number spending much of the autumn and winter here, mostly on the freshwater loughs in the south arm of the island. Watching the local movements of these conspicuous birds keep us entertained and after this sighting of the pair feeding together on 4th November, they seemed to disappear away from the island for about a month, before reappearing again in the same location. Where they might have been in the meantime is anyone's guess... if only they could tell us!
