megger working principle
A Megger, short for "Megohmmeter," is an electrical test instrument used to measure the electrical resistance (or insulation resistance) of electrical equipment and cables.
Its working principle is based on the measurement of the insulation resistance between the conductive parts of an electrical system and the ground. Here's how it works:
Voltage Application: A Megger generates a high DC voltage, typically in the range of 500 to 5,000 volts, depending on the specific model and the application.
This high voltage is applied between the conductive part of the equipment or cable being tested and the ground.
Measuring Current: The Megger measures the current flowing through the insulation of the equipment or cable under this high voltage. Since insulation is supposed to have very high resistance, ideally, the current flowing through it should be minimal.
Resistance Calculation: The instrument then calculates the insulation resistance by using Ohm's law, which states that resistance (R) is equal to voltage (V) divided by current (I), i.e., R = V/I. In this case, the voltage is known, and the current is measured. The resulting resistance value is typically displayed in megaohms (MΩ).
Display and Evaluation: The Megger displays the calculated insulation resistance value on its screen. A higher resistance reading indicates better insulation, while a lower reading suggests a potential problem with the insulation.
The Megger is commonly used for preventive maintenance and quality control in various industries, such as electrical utilities, industrial manufacturing, and construction.
It helps identify issues like deteriorating insulation, moisture ingress, or other factors that may lead to electrical faults or breakdowns.
Regular testing with a Megger can help prevent electrical failures and ensure the safety and reliability of electrical systems.
