Hello and welcome to our video on the fascinating history of dead end patented planes. In this video, Jim Gehring from Brown Tool Auctions will take us through the unique features and significance of these rare antique woodworking planes.
Jim explains how the method of holding and adjusting plane cutters used to be the same for wooden planes, but when metal planes were introduced, various ways of holding and adjusting cutters were developed. He showcases some of the most sought-after dead end patented planes, including the Challenge Plane, patented in 1883 by Arthur Goldsboro and manufactured by Ivor Johnson. Despite the well-known names associated with it, this plane was a flop.
Jim also covers Leonard Bailey, one of the best-known developers of patented American planes, who went on to work for the Stanley Company and developed the standard plane holding and adjustment mechanism that became the industry norm. Bailey's earlier plane is different from Stanley's planes because it is a vertical post plane. This means that the frog is fixed to a vertical post, allowing the cutter to be adjusted at a steep angle.
