Today, Lawman Guitars is Presenting..
A beautiful 1957 Silvertone Artist with an original Silvertone Period correct Gray Case.
Great pair for the collector or the player looking for a tone machine with one of the much sought after Valco Single Coil Pickups produced in Chicago during the 1950’s…
This 1958 Silvertone Artist is in great shape, 100% original condition and in perfect working order.
One of the rarest Silvertone instruments, this model was produced by Valco in Chicago, home of the Supro and National brands.
As such, the Artist (which was only produced for a couple short years in the late 1950s) is virtually identical to the Supro Rhythm Tone model 1522S as well as the Belmont, with slightly different cosmetic appointments for the Silvertone version which was offered only through the Sears catalog.
With a peanut body, classic tuxedo looks, and gold hardware, the Artist is as visually striking as it is tonally rich and dynamic.
The oversized single coil pickup is powered by a large ceramic magnet, and the tone is quintessential Supro, with power, bark, and glassy shimmer when strummed with a pick.
It doesn't get any simpler than a single neck pickup with Volume and Tone knobs, yet the Artist makes the most of this basic layout and rolling off the tone knob gives you some very warm jazzy tones that are still defined and focused.
The neck has a deep V profile that has plenty of chunk and heft without feeling harsh or overwhelming. On the head stock, the original gold Kluson Deluxe single line tuning machines are intact, as well as perhaps the coolest head stock logo of all time.
The gold logo depicts a cowboy.. No wonder I like these so well!
Much of the "Silvertone" logo and chevron has worn off of the pick guard, as the silkscreen was directly in the pick path (it's an extremely common occurrence to see this text missing due to its placement).
The original knobs are intact, as well as the stock "lightning bolt" compensated Brazilian rosewood Bridge and gold floating bridge cups with height adjustable thumb wheels.
You can see wear around the bridge posts as it has moved over the years. (See pic on Reverb)
While the neck is finished in original black nitro lacquer, the finish on the body (also original) is more like a vacuum form thin plasticized wrap.. It has a texture appearance that's more glossy than a typical lacquer finish of this era.
Completely original and in great shape..Only one area that has some of the finish missing on the bass side…see pic on Reverb…
The neck has some wear dings as you can see.. This wear of course is purely cosmetic, and the guitar is structurally sound with zero cracks or repairs.
The original Silvertone Gray case, although an original case from the era is not original to the guitar. As you can see, I have been saving this beautiful case for just the right guitar. I finally found it in this Silvertone Artist. Happy to pair these two up.
