’innī shakartu li-ẓālimī ẓulmī
wa-ghafartu dhāka lahu ‘alá ‘ilmī
wa ra’aytuhu ’asdá ’ilayya yadan
lammā ’abāna bi-jahlihi ḥilmī
raja‘at ’isā’atuhu ‘alayhi wa-’iḥ-
sānī fa‘āda muḍā‘afa al-jurmi
wa-ghaḍawtu dhā ’ajrin wa-maḥmadatin
wa-ghādā bi-kasbi ẓ-ẓulmi wa- l-’ithmi
fa-kā’annamā l-’iḥsānu kāna lahu
wa-’anā l-musī’u ’ilayhi fī l-ḥukmi
mā zāla yaẓlimunī wa-’arḥamuhu
ḥattá bakaytu lahu mina aẓ-ẓulmi
SOMEHOW OFF-THE-CUFF TRANSLATIONAL VERSION I, YET I CAN’T HELP BEING OUT OF MY OWN SECOND NATURE:
In a tokenistic cue of owing a ‘debt of gratitude’
unto my oppressor for placing me—
hear it, O thou!, straight from the horse’s mouth—
under the yoke of his own tyranny,
I pardoned him for that transgression
with full cognizance of mine own mind;
for I perceived that he had lavished me with a benefaction—
when, albeit his very incognizance, he let my forbearance be shown.
Upon himself alone, the conflation of his malefaction and my Magnanimity
rebounded, whence his own culpability became manyfold compounded.
We’re, as my and his wont, ‘early risers.’ At this ‘unearthly hour,’ there’s a far cry
as between my kismet and that of his since God is ‘Partium Elargitor:’
the ‘Dispenser of Fortunes,’ and ‘Bestower of Sustenance.’
Being up with the lark, and in my and his earshot is the ‘dawn chorus,’ he and I
are ordained differently by the ‘Apportioner of Lots,’ Who has His ‘say,’
nay, His ‘acts:’ that is, the ‘acts of God:’ even those ‘avian wights’
have ‘their aliquot share’ of the ‘Fortunes,’ ‘Sustenance,’ and ‘Lots.’
Thusly came the dawn, whence did I rewardingly loom large as being girded
with a merry-go-round of [my encomiast’s] courteously-spiritual recompense
and fairly-laudatory praiseworthiness, [or say,
‘exogenously-determined personality cult’ that isn’t
of our own: we, the Arabs, or say, the Arabians
or the Arabized and Arabianized oners].
To the contrary, for him was it a false dawn as being laden
with the notoriously-entertained acquisitions of iniquity and sin.
It’s well-nigh perceivable as though the would-be beneficence had been
his to bestow, and I misguided him, or say, I’m the malefactor per se
in the adjudication of things: root and branch, or through and through.
On the go, he kept on the spot persistently in oppressing me whilst I continued
to show him clemency: paradoxically, he’s too oppressive to be inculpable:
I’m the one to blame: that is, he’s ‘the blamer;’ I ‘the blamee:’
to wit, I’m ‘the oppressor;’ he’s ‘the oppressee:’
Wellaway, he’ terribly worth of the tears to be shed!
