Rating our democracy: Should India bother about negative global reports?

The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance in its report 'Global State of Democracy has placed India in the list of democracies that have experienced a decline in their democratic tenets over the last 10 years. Earlier this year, Sweden’s V-Dem Institute categorised India as an “electoral autocracy” and Freedom House called India 'partly free' with a score of 67 out of 100. So, should Indians be concerned about the quality of democracy that we enjoy. Or is it a case of foreign organisations not being able to appreciate the nuances of Indian system of governance and its societal values? We talked to VHP International Working President Shri Alok Kumar and CPI-ML leader and well-known activist Kavita Krishnan to know their views.
