Apple Breeding, Planting out the Seedlings

Описание: It's time to plant out this years crop of apple seedlings. The seedlings are all grown from intentional crosses of two selected parent varieties made last spring. I'm planting them close together at about 5 inches apart because there are so many special projects going that I'm running out of room in the garden for food! The seedlings will be grown through this season then eventually grafted out onto dwarfing rootstock in permanent trial rows until they fruit and can be assessed. I grew out around 125 seedlings this year and quite a few show very strong red pigment traits which indicate strong potential for red flesh in the fruit.
