Nationwide Risk Solution Team Visit to IBHS + Charlotte Memories | Storm Science & Fun | Jan 2026

Описание: In January 2026, our Nationwide Risk Solutions team gathered in Charlotte, North Carolina for an unforgettable few days of learning, collaboration, and fun.
We kicked off the visit with a team dinner at OMB Brewery in Ballantyne, celebrating our first night together—and a special birthday celebration for Ned 🎂. It was great to finally meet the entire team in person, made even more special since it all happened in my home city, Charlotte.

The next day, we visited the Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS) for an insightful field day. IBHS is a nonprofit scientific research organization dedicated to studying how severe weather—such as hurricanes, hail, tornadoes, and wildfire—impacts homes and businesses. Using full-scale testing and real-world research, IBHS develops science-based solutions to make structures more resilient and communities safer.

🌪️ Hurricane Simulation Lab
At IBHS, we saw their massive hurricane-simulation facility, where industrial fans recreate winds up to 130 mph, along with wind-driven rain and hail. These tests help researchers understand how homes fail during storms and evaluate stronger construction methods, including FORTIFIED standards for wind-resistant buildings.

🧊 Hail Research Center (Hail Lab)
The IBHS Hail Lab was another highlight. Engineers manufacture realistic hailstones and launch them using a pressurized cannon to test roofing and building materials. Some of us even got the chance to fire the hail cannon ourselves—an unforgettable experience!

On our way back from Rock Hill, SC, we took a scenic detour through Waxhaw, NC, visiting the famous 12-mile suspension bridge trail that connects North and South Carolina near my Millbridge community. Everyone loved the walk and the views.

We wrapped up the day with dinner at Rooster’s Restaurant in Ballantyne, followed by a productive strategy meeting on the final day. Before heading home, we celebrated Veronica’s upcoming birthday, ending the trip with laughter, teamwork, and great memories.

These last few days were truly special—full of learning, connection, and fun. Grateful for this amazing team and experience.
